What is the purpose of exchanging “The Peace”? How long should it last?

Your answers: The purpose of exchanging the peace is as an act of reconciliation after the prayer of confession and absolution. There is no need to cavort around the church like rush hour at Charing Cross, but a simple greeting with the person next to you.

Peter Walker
Ashburnham, East Sussex

The purpose of the Peace is to see how many people you can shake hands with before the Vicar calls “time” by announcing the offertory hymn.

Dennis Abbott (Reader)
Stone, Staffordshire

Your question: Why are retired clergy with permission to officiate excluding from voting in elections to the General Synod? D. J.
