THE first phase of restoring Chichester Cathedral’s lead roof has been completed. Scaffolding will begin to be removed from the quire roof on Monday, allowing the public to see it for the first time since work began in January.

The scaffolding will now be moved to the north and south transepts, where the work will continue. The new roof is historically authentic, and lead has replaced the failing copper. Eventually, the whole cathedral roof will have been replaced.

A total of £3.8 million has been raised towards the £5.8 million target needed to complete the restoration works. The roof appeal was launched by Dame Patricia Routledge earlier this year (News, 2 March).

Specialist used techniques similar to those of the original craftsmen to repair and restore the roof, with Sussex oak being used to repair the original 13th-century oak beams.

The appeal’s chairman, Daniel Hodson, said: “The generosity of so many individuals and organisations confirms that Chichester Cathedral is a much-loved landmark. . .

“However, we have a further £2 million still to raise, and we must continue with our fundraising effort to ensure 350,000 visitors can continue to come to Chichester each year to explore and be inspired. Every donation is valued and will help us to achieve our target.”
