CDM complaint against priest who spoke of climate threat dismissed

08 December 2023

Community of the Resurrection, Mirfield

A PRIEST of the Community of the Resurrection in Mirfield who described climate change as an existential threat has had a Clergy Discipline Measure complaint against him dismissed.

The Yorkshire Post reported on Wednesday of last week that a member of the congregation, Kevin Sims, accused Fr Nicolas Stebbing CR of “promoting the completely false gospel of climate change”.

The Bishop of Leeds, the Rt Revd Nick Baines, dismissed the complaint, reportedly saying that the views to which Fr Stebbing subscribed reflected the position taken by the General Synod.

The Clergy Discipline Commission reviewed the decision and was in agreement that a priest could not be disciplined for expressing an agreed policy of the Church.
